Learn the “Whys” and “Why Nots” of horse training. When coming to a clinic with Michael, he is going to provide you with your very own program that will allow you to reach the goals that you desire. Each clinic is tailored to the horse and riders needs. Come and expect to RIDE!
Michael firmly believes in giving each rider the tools they need to put the pieces together in their training. You should not expect your learning to end when the clinic is over! Each person will be prepared to take the exercises they have learned and be able to apply them to other horses, or to continue to perfect them on the horse they rode.
This clinic is taught in a 3 Day format, to allow each rider the time to really begin to become confident in their maneuvers and reach a better understanding of the exercises.
Come expecting to learn
In hand bridle work
How to apply the bridle work to the saddle
How to fully engage the hind end and shoulders in your riding
How to speed up and slow down each piece of your horse
Getting a more relaxed horse at the walk, trot, and lope
Teaching the horse responsiveness to your cues
How to get nice and crisp transitions
Softness to the bridle
Learning how to properly use your reins and legs while riding
How to obtain nice circles at all gaits
This is the basic overlay of Horsemanship Clinics, but they are certainly not limited to this.
Each Day will start at 9:30am and run until sometime around 5:00pm. An hour lunch break will be provided at noon.
The first day will consist of a small group meeting to get to know everyone and to discuss what each individual is looking to get out of the clinic. Michael will then ask everyone to warm up as they generally do so that he can assess each persons riding levels and begin to create a program for you and your horse.
Be sure you are ready to ride! Do not come expecting to be able to skate under the radar and not interact. Please wear proper riding attire such as CLOSED TOE SHOES! We will not allow flip flops, or any open toed shoes in the arena.
Bring what it is that you prefer to ride in, though we strongly suggest having a snaffle bit and rope reins with you.
Also make sure to have a dressage whip.
Riding fee is $550 with $150 deposit to hold your spot.
Auditing fee is $25 per person.
Once you register, please complete the Clinic Form on the top of the Events Registration Page. It can be emailed to us, or sent through snail more. More information can be found once reviewing the form.

Join us for the 2nd Annual AHCA MO State Championship! Every Friday before the competition there will be a training clinic instructed by Brandy Von Holten with Double Excel Horsemanship. Make sure and call to reserve your spot in the training clinic, because it is only open to 12 participants. We will focus on you and your equine, so you can “Double Excel” together!
You can obtain your membership and register your equine the day of the event (or preferably the day before the event) at Von Holten Ranch!
There are 14 total AHCA events in the state championship, however, only your TOP 10 placings will be used to determine your state ranking. You must have at least 8 competitions to be eligible for state ranking for 2017.
AHCA is a national organization that has their national championships held in Sedalia, MO Oct.19-Oct.22, 2017. You only need to compete in 3 AHCA competitions to qualify for nationals.
Von Holten Ranch awards ribbons for the TOP 6 in every division at each AHCA competition. The AHCA has 50% payback in every division. However, if you need to decline winnings, or have your winnings awarded in the form of a gift certificate to keep your eligibility in other organizations, that is easily done to help you!
At the conclusion of the AHCA MO State Championship series, you can apply your winnings to a buckle. The buckles must be ordered through Von Holten Ranch, who must order them through the AHCA Headquarters. Only those that place in the TOP 10 will be eligible for buckles. Buckles will be awarded to say one of the following: State Champion, Reserve State Champion, Top 5, or Top 10.
In addition to the buckles for the Champions and Reserve Champions, saddle fenders can either be purchased or your own saddle fenders can be stamped through Von Holten Ranch. No other saddle makers will be permitted other than the saddle maker Von Holten Ranch uses to ensure consistency and quality standards.
Please call 660-668-0880 for any questions.
Electric sites, cabins, and stalls are available. It is highly recommended that competitors arrive the day before. Walk throughs start promptly at 7:30, and will ONLY be completed ONCE. Hearing what the judge has to say about each obstacle is extremely important.
Let’s see how much you and your equine can Double Excel together in 2017!
